I used to be 6’0″ and 220 lbs of mostly fat. I don’t know how I got that way (well, I pretty much know it was due to lack of regular exercise and diet). I discovered Crossfit when I was offered the opportunity to participate in a study that Old Dominion University was doing with the Navy. I was assigned a 6 week regimen of Crossfit to do without much instruction. Baseline tests were completed and off I went on my own to figure it out. I referenced the crossfit website for instructional videos and tried to stick to the program as best as I could. It was hard, too hard. In the end I didn’t make much gain in physical fitness or body weight, but it did peak my interest in the program and how I could be competitive with myself. I found a local crossfit gym that my friends went to. Since they were 60+ year old grandparents, I figured I could probably do it as well. Once I joined the gym and got good instruction and training in technique as well as more encouragement than I could possibly want, I was hooked on something that I thought I could maintain since I never was interested in going to the gym to use the machines or simply lift weights. I spent almost a year at that gym and then deployed to Iraq in much better shape than when I started – Down to 200 lbs with lower body fat percentage. I spent a year in Iraq and tried to work out on my own following the crossfit main site programming. Did fairly well, but was not consistent enough. I came back and moved up here to Portsmouth where I found Crossfit Portsmouth. In just the few months that I have been coming to Crossfit Portsmouth, my physical fitness has improved greatly. I’ve lost weight and gained muscle. I’ve had great improvements that I could not have done on my own. This is a unique workout program that works really well and it would be a shame if we lost it since it is the only Crossfit gym for miles in this area. I strongly implore the city to approve the zoning variance so we can keep this great program going.

Having exercised regularly for most of my life I was looking for a change and more of a challenge.I joined CrossFit almost 1 year ago and being one of the older members (60), I worried I would feel uncomfortable amid a group of young jocks. I was pleasantly surprised that I had nothing to worry about. I found people of all ages and fitness levels, work-outs that could be scaled to one’s ability, and more importantly, an atmosphere of support, camaraderie and healthy challenge.
Before CrossFit, despite regularly exercising, I began to see my blood pressure increase and my lower back become tight and inflexible, so that I had a hard time bending over in the morning to put on my socks. Since CrossFit my blood pressure is lower than it has ever been and putting on my socks is a piece of cake (which, by the way, I have stopped eating since CrossFit).
CrossFit is based on “functional fitness”. The idea is to build and maintain muscle mass, improve balance, endurance and flexibility; all which are necessary help one “function” better in everyday life.
CrossFit manages to blend personal training with group fitness producing an hour of structure, variety and the most challenging workout you will ever do.
It is the highlight of my day. I go every morning and leave feeling strong, young and capable.

Dear CFP,
I wanted to say thank sooo much for welcoming me with open arms and teaching me more than I thought ever was possible. You truly changed my life , and I am so thankful that I got to be part of an incredible team. Everyone was so wonderful to me, and you brought me so much light back into my life.
Sincerely,
Noel C. Age 26
There are two things that keep me coming back to CFP week after week,
month after month: The wide variety of challenging workouts and the
wonderful community of trainers and members who are simultaneously
encouraging and competitive. Since starting CrossFit, over a year ago,
my fitness has skyrocketed, I’ve regained my “high school” weight, and
I feel great — I don’t ever see myself wanting to go someplace else.

Highly, highly, HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I’ve tried many physical fitness programs – from weightlifting, sports training, gym classes and more. I heard about Crossfit from a friend who insisted that I give it a shot and … WOW! It’s one of the most exciting, fun & rewarding exercise programs I have ever experienced! Each workout is intense, fast and diverse. In fact, you may train everyday for months and may never do the same workout twice! (Perfect for the person who goes to the gym and gets bored at the same old routine!) … and, the combination of the intense training and the constantly-changing workouts has resulted in mind-blowing results in my strength, body tone and endurance! The trainers are fantastic – they explain each workout thoroughly, keep you motivated and are a joy to see everyday. I’m now addicted to style of working out and I tell everyone
(regardless of age/sex or shape) to give Crossfit Portsmouth a try! It rocks!

“The couple that crossfits together stays together” – this is just a quick phrase that I think describes the importance of being healthy together, however a couple chooses to do it. I’m engaged to the marine corps gunnery segeant below and we love sharing crossfit together – which enables us to take advantage of all of the activities available to us around the area.
Both of us are recent transplants to Portsmouth and crossfit helped us both to make wonderful new friends in a record amount of time – I work from home and so rarely get a chance to get out and see/meet people. Crossfit has been a source of both physical, mental and social health! We don’t know what we would do without it!

What does Crossfit do for me? I’m currently on active duty in the Marine Corps, and as one would expect you must maintain a high level of activity so we can protect our nation at a moment’s notice. Unfortunately I’m stationed on a Navy base which doesn’t fully approve of serious physical fitness challenges and methods… enter Crossfit. I can easily say that I’m stronger and faster because of the training I receive at Portsmouth Crossfit; their availability and coaching ensure that I not only get a good intense workout, but that I also do it safely which keeps me from injuring myself and therefore taking me out of the fight.
